The Wisconsin Rapids Fire Department is a full time, career fire department, operating with a chief, a deputy chief, three crew command captains, and 27 firefighters. Department members also are all paramedics who operate the city's ambulances for medical emergencies and critical care transports. All the department's personnel are also trained and/or certified as hazardous materials technicians and technical rescue experts.
The department has two fire stations - one at East Riverview Expressway and 12th Street South (1511 12th Street South) and the other at West Grand Avenue and 17th Avenue (1641 West Grand Avenue). Departmental equipment includes four ambulances, three engines, an aerial ladder truck, a specialized rescue truck, a utility pickup, a rescue boat, a hazardous materials response trailer, and three staff/command vehicles. Water and ice rescue, confined space entry and hazardous materials mitigation also are the fire department's responsibility.
The department oversees the city burning ordinances. Free services offered are each fire station include: tours; home fire safety surveys (upon request by the home owner or occupant); speakers bureau offering public education and printed information about fire prevention; cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid; blood pressure screenings from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at both fire stations; a Christmas toy repair project; a loan closet providing crutches, walkers, and canes (security deposits are required) at Station 1 ONLY; commerical fire inspections; "Keep the Wreath Green" program, a fire safety awareness program at Christmas time; a Final Alarm Procession and memorial service in October during Fire Prevention Week honoring firefighters that have died in the line of duty; and a fire department history museum at Station 2 at West Grand Avenue and 17fh Avenue.
The department makes the following requests:
- pull to the right and stop when emergency vehicles are responding to fires or ambulance calls;
- display house numbers, as required by city ordinance;
- make sure smoke detectors are installed by each bedroom in each home or apartment and are in working order;
- adopt a hydrant and keep snow cleared from fire hydrants;
- be respectful of your neighbors when burning in the city following the guidelines found on this web page.
