Mayor Shane Blaser has declared Friday, June 16th, 2023 as Poppy Day in Wisconsin Rapids. The red poppy is a recognized national symbol of sacrifice worn by Americans since World War I.
The full proclamation is below: WISCONSIN RAPIDS -- The Rapids Rediscovered housing investment program, has recently been modified to now allow for renter-occupied construction, including duplexes, to qualify for funding: $10,000 for demolition and construction; and $5,000 for construction only. The program exists to strengthen existing neighborhoods through reinvestment by creating new construction.
Program basics: Builder/buyer completes an application meeting the minimum program requirements (www.wirapids.org/economic-development) and submits the application along with proof of ownership or an offer to purchase to the Community Development Department. The Community Development Department performs an internal review to ensure a complete application has been submitted. The Planning Commission and City Council review the application for compliance. The lot is purchased by the builder/buyer, if applicable, and a grant contract is executed. Builder/buyer constructs the new home, which shall be completed within 1 year. To be eligible for the Grant, you must own the property or have a purchase agreement for a lot, building plans, and financial commitment in hand. Prior to the submission of an application, a pre-conference is required with the Community Development Department. Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin – The City of Wisconsin Rapids and American Legion Post 9 announce the second annual Wisconsin Rapids Veterans Honor Walk.
From Memorial Day through Veterans Day, custom banners celebrating veterans will be hung on light poles along Grand Avenue, from 8th Street to City Hall. Booklets with maps and banner pictures will be placed inside businesses along the route. To celebrate the unveiling of this year’s Veterans Honor Walk, the American Legion Post 9 will host an informal gathering at McMillan Memorial Library, 490 E Grand Ave., Wisconsin Rapids, on May 26, from 2 – 4 p.m. “This year, the Veterans Honor Walk will have 40 banners commemorating the accomplishments and sacrifices of veterans and active service members in our community. Thank you for your service to our country,” said Mayor Shane Blaser. Those interested in purchasing a banner for the 2024 Veterans Honor Walk can find an application at wirapids.org or at City Hall, 444 West Grand Avenue. The American Legion Post 9 will accept applications for 2024 until there are 40 approved applications, or until February 28, 2024. First time banners will receive priority. Public Works Week is celebrated to recognize and raise awareness about the importance of public works in communities. It is typically observed during the third week of May. Public works refer to the infrastructure and services provided by government agencies and organizations that contribute to the well-being and quality of life for citizens. This includes a wide range of essential services such as road construction and maintenance, water and wastewater management, public transportation, parks and recreation facilities, solid waste management, and more. Mayor Shane Blaser has made a proclamation recognizing National EMS Week, May 21st-27th, 2023.
