Hiring Process
Field Training Program The Wisconsin Rapids Police Department has a 14 week Field Training Program. It is comprised of 3 or more Field Training Officers and is headed up by a Field Training Supervisor. A new employee will be scheduled for training on each of the shifts for approximately 12 weeks and then an additional 2 weeks of "shadowing" with the primary FTO. The training program may be adjusted based on individual needs. Upon successful completion of these steps, a new officer will be placed in the patrol schedule and will continue to report daily to the FTO supervisor. A new officer has a probationary status for one year from date of hire. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

RECRUIT pATROL OFFICER OPPORTUNITY
This program allows an individual to be hired as an officer before attending Basic Law Enforcement Training (Academy). Newly hired recruit officers shall receive a pay rate equal to eighty-five (85%) percent of the patrol officer's starting rate while attending the Academy. The recruit patrol officer shall be paid forty (40) hours per week in the academy. Continued employment is contingent upon successful completion of the Academy. Candidates participating in the Recruit Patrol Officer program will be required to sign a pre-employment agreement regarding the recovery of costs for recruit academy attendance, should they not maintain employment with us. No other contractual benefits or privileges are extended to recognize prior service without agreement between the City and Association. The Wisconsin Rapids Police Department is headed by the Chief of Police who reports directly to the Mayor. Immediately under the Chief of Police is a Deputy Chief who is responsible for the operational detail of the Department. Under the Deputy Chief are four Patrol Lieutenants who act as Shift Commanders on four crews who are responsible for all personnel and operations on their assigned shift. Reporting to the Patrol Lieutenants are Shift Sergeants who directly supervise the Police Officers. The Fire Department is not currently recruiting. Please check back for future openings. Option #1 Through Chippewa Valley Technical College (CVTC): Application materials may be obtained from www.firedepartmenthiring.com. If qualifications have been met, you will be invited to take the CPAT and written examination through Chippewa Valley Technical College (CVTC). CPAT and exam must be completed prior to being hired. Entry level starting salary for 2024 is $60,334.70, with eligible increases at 6 and 12 months, plus an attractive fringe benefit package, to include group health, dental, and life insurance and participation in the State Retirement Plan. Salary for Lateral Transfers will depend on years of service ($63,137.95 - $74,604.45). Vacation time for lateral transfers depending on years of service up to two weeks.
